Summitech has overall grown to be a successful company. We are a busy team working around the clock and ultimately making money. As the owner of this company, alongside my business partner Pete, we have realized that maybe we aren’t just here to make money, but to be able to provide for our employees and our community. As a team, we have decided to incorporate our philanthropic efforts into our business quarterly goals. Every quarter we chose a local or nearby charity or philanthropy to extend our help to in whatever way we can. Last quarter we spent an afternoon with our team at the Northern Nevada Food Bank; we packaged food into boxes that would be distributed to families in need. Before that we have supported local charities including Make A Wish, the Northern Nevada Humane Society, the VA Hospital and the Nevada State Firefighter’s Association, and have adopted a family ever year through the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation. This most recent quarter, the Summitech team took a day trip down to the Shriner’s Hospital in Sacramento and spent a day there along with presenting a check. I would like to give a little insight on their organization below and how to help.
I opened this company to be able to spend time with my family while still supporting them, live a healthy lifestyle and an overall happy life. I consider myself very fortunate and will never take anything for granted. I have met some amazing people in my time that have given me great ideas, incredible friendships, and helped me fulfill my dreams. The only thing that has topped this feeling is our philanthropic efforts throughout the years. We truly believe in giving back at Summitech and we have instilled it into our company philosophy
The Shriner’s Hospital for Children
The Shriner’s Hospital for Children works to provide healthcare to children with burn injuries, neuromusculoskeletal conditions, or other healthcare needs for no cost at all. They provide a family-centered atmosphere and learning environment to ensure these children live their lives to the absolute fullest. Summitech was lucky enough to have been able to travel to the Sacramento Shriner’s Hospital to tour the facility and present a check to this wonderful organization. Needless to say, all of our hearts were touched. From walking through the clinic area, to the prosthetics lab, to seeing their state of the art x-ray technology, we were all in shock as just how much this hospital actually does for their patients. We learned about the history of the Shriner’s and how they have built this amazing hospital system for families without financial means to care for their children. We also learned that they are always in need of donations. They are only able to keep doing what they are doing, if they have funding, and almost all of theirs comes from donations. We learned that patients come from Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Mexico, just to name a few, to receive care from this facility. After spending the day there, we urge you to look further into the Shriner’s Hospital and see how you can give to them. If you need help getting started, we would love to have you contact us and we share what information we have.
Why Giving Back is Important
We are not writing this blog to brag about our company, but to lend some advice to fellow companies and managers. We strongly advise you to go out into your community and help in any way you can. Take a half day once a month to take your team to a local charity and donate your time and resources. Not only will it make each and every one of your employees feel good for helping out, but it will also encourage teamwork and team bonding. As many of us who own our own companies or are managers know, if you don’t work on your team outside of daily business, you aren’t going to work as a cohesive team in your daily routine. These outings to help those in need or charities that need some financial help, are a great way to do this. We have definitely noticed some team bonding when we were sorting food boxes at the Food Bank, throwing each other cans, getting a laugh in, and loosening up from the normal daily office life. There’s a lot to learn from helping out others and we have found it to be a very important part of our company.
If you have any questions about any of the charities we have mentioned or simply how to start your philanthropic efforts, please feel free to reach out to us and we will help guide you in the right direction.
